LOIC tool DDos attack from Windows to shut down website
DDoS Attacks Using Low Orbit Ion Cannon. (LOIC)
In this blog we are going to be covering DDoS attacks, what they are, and the tools that are used to attack. What is a DDoS attack you ask? Well in its simplest form a DDoS attack is used to make a server’s resources unavailable to clients requesting information from it, i.e. Apache, IIS, DNS or Domain Controllers. These types of attacks have been around since the internet itself got started, yes, even back in the days of bulletin boards and ARPANET. Now that you know what a DDOS attack is, let’s look at some of the different types of attacks that can be administered to a target.
Disclaimer: Only use this attack while researching on your own network, it’s easily traced andineffective behind a proxy with a single machine.
Layer 4 DDoS: Thousands of individuals are used to take down a single target.
Layer 7 DDoS: An Individual attacker brings down the target system.
Link-Local DDoS: IPv6 RA Packets used to bring down target system.
Now since this is my first blog on DDoS attacks, we are going to start with a weak DDoS tool called LOIC. This is the Low Orbit Ion Cannon it’s the same as pressing the refresh button over and over and over and over again in your browser. If you get enough of these happening simultaneously the server getting attacked gets too many requests and stops working. You can download the Low Orbit Ion Canon tool from:http://sourceforge.net/projects/loic/ once you have downloaded it simply extract it and run the executable ( You must have Windows .NET framework v4.xx) to allow LOIC to run properly.
Let’s start the tool up and take a look, as you can see there are a bunch of fields we have the URL field and the IP field. This is where you want to enter the IP or FQDN of the server. To get the IP address all you need to do is go to start > run, type “cmd” without quotes, press enter. A black box will come up this is called your console screen. type “ping www.URL.com” it will ping the web server and reply with an IP address.
From the screenshot above you can see the the URL:http://www.nullsetcomputerco.com gets resolved to the IP address of 184.168.37.1. You will want to put this in either the URL field or the IP field.
Click “Lock On” to arm the program, LOIC works by flooding the host with requests. Once you have entered the IP address or URL address turn your threads up to around 10,000. Leave your port as 80, or your attack is not going to work. The next thing to do after you have set the IP address and the threads, click “IMMA CHARGIN MAH LAZER” and this will begin the DDoS attack.
If enough requests are sent to the server from multiple different sources the web server exhausts all of it’s resources trying to serve all the different requests flooding it. This is a primitive DDoS attack.
