ASUS Zenfone 2 display problem flickering horizontal lines vertical bands discoloration

ASUS Zenfone 2 display problem flickering horizontal lines vertical bands discoloration

My almost new ASUS Zenfone 2 ZE551ML has suddenly developed a display issues like flickering, lines, bands and discoloration. When you reboot or turn on the device you see the ASUS logo and right after that a thick vertical line or band appears right on the middle of the screen. When the device finally boots up, everything appears to be fine. Then it starts glitching and horizontal lines appear on the top of the screen. Then, many vertical bars slowly start to appear, eventually taking over the whole screen. Swiping down from the top of the screen will temporarily resolve the issue. Also when you open some apps, only the top 25% becomes visible. Right now this Zenfone 2 display problem has been coming and going. When you are working with the device for a long time the issue seems to resolve but when you leave it for some time, the problem resurfaces.

Update: Situation has worsened now and only a small portion on the top of the screen becomes visible- that too for a few seconds and then the LCD is covered by vertical rainbow colored bands. I have also noticed that the screen becomes visible when you start charging the phone, but once you unplug it, it again starts glitching.

I havent found any permanent solution for this LCD issue. Many Zenfone 2 users are all of a sudden facing similar display glitches, which has led many to believe that this is caused by a recent software update that ASUS released. Some of them have reportedly resolved the issue by simply tweaking certain settings while most have had to replace the entire LCD panel. If you are still under warranty, you can take your Zenfone 2 the nearest service center and they will simply repair it for you free of charge. However, if this problem has emerged after you dropped the phone, it wont be covered by warranty.

Here are some suggested fix for Asus Zenfone 2 display flickering and vertical bars issue

Method 1: Disable Hardware Overlay

  • Go to Settings >> scrool down and tap "About"
  • Tap on "Software Information"
  • Keep tapping on "Build number" until developers option is enabled
  • again from Settings >> select "Developers options"
  • Scroll down and select "Disable HW overlays"
See if that resolved the IPS display issues of your Zenfone 2.

Method 2: Wipe Cache Partition

Boot into recovery and wipe cache by following these steps
  • Turn off phone
  • Press and hold volume up and power button at the same time
  • When you hear the buzz, let go of the power button but keep pressing volume up
  • Now you will enter Fastboot
  • Use the volume button to switch to "Recovery mode" and press power button to select it
  • Now you will see a new screen with a green Android lying down
  • Press volume up and power and the same time and let go
  • Now from recovery scroll down and select "wipe cache partition"
  • Do not turn off your phone until this process is completed
    • sometimes it can take as long as 15-20 mins

Method 3: Check for loose connection

Sometimes the display flickering, color fading out and vertical bands/bars might occur because you dropped your phone and the display connection became loose from the motherboard. If yo you are confident about disassembling your phone, just use the right screwdrivers to unscrew and take apart the phone. Once you find the display connectors, make sure they are securely connected to the mainboard.

Method 4: Replace LCD panel

If your phones display is still flickering and glitching, its time to admit that it is a hardware failure. If you are under warranty, then you are covered. Simply take the Zenfone 2 to the nearest ASUS service center and  they will replace the LCD. If you are out of warranty, then you can purchase a new LCD panel with digitizer online from websites like Ebay and Aliexpress. Then follow the disassembly guides (available in YouTube) to take apart the Zenfone 2 and replace the display. If you dont think you can do it, you can take your Zenfone 2 to the nearest mobile repair center and they will easily install the panel for you.

Heres a video demonstrating this screen glitching problem of Zenfone 2:

It is very unfortunate that ASUS hasnt addressed this issue on its forums. Its mostly the consumers who are discussing and suggesting the solutions. The Zenfone 2 was a great product until it started having many different issues. For what you are paying, youd expect it to last longer than a year. As for me, I have become  more wary about  affordable "high-end" phones due to this unpleasant experience with Asus Zenfone 2.

How to enable Developer Options USB Debugging in Zenfone 5 Zenfone 3 Zenfone 2 or any device

How to enable Developer Options USB Debugging in Zenfone 5 Zenfone 3 Zenfone 2 or any device

Android operating systems hide developer options in the settings because not every one needs it. However, if you do stuff like rooting and flashing custom ROMs, youll want to enable the USB debugging mode which can be accessed via developer option. The title says Zenfone 2 and Zenfone 5 but the method to enable this option is actually same for any android device. Zenfone 5 doesnt have official Lollipop update so the first step before you can flash a custom Android Lollipop 5 is to unlock the bootloader. To unlock bootloader you need to use ADB in USB debugging mode.

Update: Now you can easily unlock Zenfone 2s bootloader by using the official bootloader unlock tool.

Enabling developer options and debugging in ASUS Zenfone 2 and Zenfone 5 and other android devices

  • Go to Settings  >> Scroll all the way down and select "About phone (or tablet)"
  • Scroll down from About and select "Software information"
  • Tap on the Build number until you get a notification that says "developer option is enabled"
  • Go back to Settings  >> Scroll down and you will now see "Developer options"
  • Open Developer options and enable "USB debugging" (or Android debugging)
Once inside the Developer options you get access to lots of advanced features like advanced reboot, bug report, Bluetooth HCI snoop, Process Stats, show visual feedbacks for touches, show pointer location, show CPU usage and so on. If you have installed custom ROMs like Cyanogenmod 11, you will also get the option to enable or disable root.

Now that your USB debugging is on, you can proceed to root and unlock your devices bootloader. After that you simply need to flash the latest CWM (clockworkmod recovery) which lets you install the latest compatible custom ROMs in your Android device.

How to increase max display brightness of Zenfone 2

How to increase max display brightness of Zenfone 2

The first thing you will notice about your brand new  ASUS Zenfone 2 is that its 5.5-inch display has a very low brightness. The dim maximum brightness and the sporadic NFC problem are the two of the biggest issues I’ve experienced with the Zenfone 2. Otherwise, it is a really awesome phone for the price. I have however managed to somewhat fix the display brightness problem of the Zenfone 2. Previously I was utterly disappointed with the display but now I am very satisfied and now the maximum brightness is actually quite high. Here is how I solved the low screen brightness problem of ASUS Zenfone 2:

Fix low display brightness issue of ASUS Zenfone 2

  1. First turn the auto brightness off
    •  Swipe down from the top of the screen two times to access the quick access menu
    • At the end of the brightness slider, tap the “auto” option to turn it off.
    • Alternatively, you can go to settings >> Display >> brightness >> then turn off "auto brightness
  2. After turning off auto-brightness, go to Settings >> scroll down and tap “Power Management”
    • Select “Power Saver” >> Tap the arrow next to the bottom-most “Customized” option
    • Now set CPU as smart, Brightness as High and optionally you can turn on extended standby.
    • Now slide your display’s brightness to the highest and you will see that your maximum brightness has significantly improved.
Let me know if the above steps has fixed the low screen brightness problem on your ASUS Zenfone 2. Do you have a better solution for this issue? Let us know in the comments. Currently I am looking for the solution for the NFC not working (pairing) problem on the Zenfone 2 and I will post a fix as soon as I find one.

Here are the screenshots of the above steps for your reference:

Solved Zenfone 2 cannot get past initial setup screen wizard

Solved Zenfone 2 cannot get past initial setup screen wizard

I recently purchased the ASUS Zenfone 2 but experience some issues right after powering on the device. After turning it on, it took me to the initial device setup/wizard. Everything looked normal until I tapped the touchscreen. The display was acting weird, the response became very slow and the setup wizard had an annoying voice command prompts for every action made. I assumed it was a display hardware issue. I couldn’t even get past the first pick a language screen easily. I had to double tap to select “next” or any option and the display wasn’t swiping like it would normally do. When I tapped an option it would be highlighted in a green dotted box. After a thorough search on the web I’ve found out that this problem is a minor one and is caused because “TalkBack” option was enabled on my Zenfone 2.To solve this annoying problem, all you have to do is disable talkback but for that you’ll have to know how to get to the settings. Here are the steps to fix the problem of ASUS Zenfone 2 cannot get past initial setup screen :

Fixed: ASUS Zenfone 2 Touchscreen  problem during initial setup

    1. Tap once on an option to select it and double tap to open
    2. Repeat the above steps until you get past the initial setup screen (just select next or skip everything)
    3. For swiping the screen you will have to use two fingers instead of one
    4. Get to Settings >> Accessibility >> TalkBack >> turn it off

    Zenfone 2 TalkBack settings

There you go now your Zenfone 2 will work as normal and you can complete your device setup as usual.

Fixed Zenfone 2 stuck in recovery after wipe cache partition

Fixed Zenfone 2 stuck in recovery after wipe cache partition

     Zenfone 2 recovery mode

Today I decided to wipe the cache partition of my Zenfone 2 because it was getting too slow. I thought this was going to be straightforward process but I would soon be proven wrong. Because the wiping was taking too long, I switched off my Zenfone 2 midway into wiping cache partition. When I switched it back on it would not boot. Instead, it  got stuck in fastboot and just showed a green sleeping(Dead) Android logo with an error! message. The error message kept flashing constantly and nothing would happen when I tried to enter the recovery by the usual method of pressing power + volume up at the same time and then releasing it. I thought it was just a minor bug that I could easily fix switching off and rebooting into recovery. Again, I just got a dead Android and couldn’t access the recovery options. However, since I could still boot into fastboot, I knew all hope wasn’t lost. Finally I was able to fix the problem by connecting the phone to my PC and running some Fastboot commands. If you are having this problem of a dead Zenfone 2 after using the wipe cache partition option in the recovery, here is how you can fix it:

How to fix Zenfone 2 Wipe Cache Partition Recovery Error

Zenfone 2 doesnt start (boot) after wipe cache partition

Before you begin, I really hope you have sufficient charge on your Zenfone 2. I had about 30% left before I messed up the recovery. If you have zero charge and your phone is not able to charge, you may not be able to use the below steps.
    1. Install ADB/Fastboot drivers in your PC
      • Note: You may have to turn off your antivirus because it may detect the adb files as a malware.
    2. Install Intel USB drivers for Android devices from here
    3. Download these stock recovery and boot images from here (not sure if you really need them)
      boot.img | droidboot.img | recovery.img
    4. Copy all of the img files to the same folder where the adb and fastboot files are located
    5. Reboot Zenfone 2 in fastboot by pressing power + volume up key (Release power button after you hear/feel the buzz). Fastboot menu is basically the first menu from which you can choose Recovery. But don’t go into recovery yet.
    6. Now connect you Zenfone 2 to your PC via USB
    7. If you have installed the USB driver, the Zenfone 2 will be detected as an Android Device
    8. Open Command Prompt and navigate to the folder where the adb and fastboot files are located
    9. Run this command- Fastboot devices which checks whether your device is detected or not
    10. Now run these commands one by one:
      • Fastboot erase cache
      • fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
      • fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
      • fastboot flash boot boot.img

Note that you will get the "permission denied" error with each of these commands. Despite the errors my Zenfone 2 was fixed because after running these commands I could finally access the recovery menu. After completing the above commands, disconnect your Zenfone 2 and then go to recovery menu by using the volume key and then pressing power key to select it. Now you will notice that the sleeping android logo with error message is no longer blinking or flashing. Press and hold power button, then (while holding power button) press Volume up key and release it and then release the power button. It should now take you to the recovery menu. If that didn’t work try this: press power button + Volume and release the buttons at the same time.

Now you will finally see the recovery menu. Use the volume keys to highlight “Wipe Cache Partition” and this press the power button to select it. Wait till the wipe cache partition is completed. Now reboot the device and your ASUS Zenfone 2 will come back to life.

I hope my tip will help a lot of people who are experiencing the same dead Zenfone 2 issue after wiping the cache partition. Many people who went through this problem think they have bricked their Zenfone 2 for good but as you can see it’s actually very easily fixed.

Fixed Asus Zenfone 2 NFC not working problem

Fixed Asus Zenfone 2 NFC not working problem

The NFC on my Zenfone 2 was working fine and easily pairing with my Bluetooth speaker and tablet. One day it suddenly stopped working. At first I thought I may have received a defective unit or that I had accidentally damanged it. I also assumed the recent firmware update disabled my NFC. However, I managed to solve this Zenfone 2 NFC issue after reading suggestions from other users in various forums. Here is how to resolve the NFC not working problem in Zenfone 2.

How to fix ASUS Zenfone 2 NFC Stopped Working Issue

The inside of the back cover has contacts for NFC antennas
    1. First Remove the cover and then put it back firmly in place. Make sure the cover snaps properly i.e no gaps anywhere.
    2. Now turn off NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
    3. Reboot your Zenfone 2
    4. Get your NFC device which you want to pair with the Zenfone
    5. The Zenfone 2’s NFC chip is somewhere in the middle i.e. right below the volume to rockers
    6. Gently tap the middle back of your Zenfone 2 (or the entire back) on the device you want to pair with.
      • Note: You have to tap or gently put the phone on the other device otherwise it won’t work. I use to simply slide my Zenfone on top of another NFC device and it wouldn’t pair. Also, you may have to tap all over the device several times until you find the right spot of the NFC chip.
    7. Once the NFC is detected, you should hear a notification sound followed by prompt that will show that the NFC device has connected to your Zenfone 2.

Sometimes your Zenfone 2 can’t pair with other devices even when the NFC is working. You will hear the notification sound but it still won’t pair. In that case, you’ll have to restart your phone and then it will work. This seems to be a software bug or caused by incompatibility with some apps you installed recently. I hope ASUS will roll out an update to fix the NFC instability issue.

If you have just put a thick protective casing on your ASUS chances are that it is the culprit. Remove the protective casing and then try to pair via NFC.

Sometimes a damaged backpanel can also cause the issue because the inside of the backcover has the leads that contact the inner NFC antenna. Swap the backcover with a new one and check if that resolves the NFC issue.

When will Zenfone 2 get Android 6 Marshmallow update

When will Zenfone 2 get Android 6 Marshmallow update

With loads of new Android smartphones released and bought every month, people are wondering when will these devices get the latest Android 6 Marshmallow update. As always the Google, Motorola, Samsung, Sony, HTC and LG are the first manufacturers to roll out the latest updates. Manufacturers like Xiaomi, Huawei, Alcatel and ASUS are usually very slow in providing the latest system updates to its users. The ASUS Zenfone 2 is one of the bestselling mid-range phones of this year and it came shipped with Android 5.0 lollipop. It has been months since its release, but the Zenfone 2 hasnt even received the Lollipop 5.1 and 5.1.1 updates, and that has made a lot of users doubtful about whether they will ever receive the Marshmallow update. Here comes the good news. Gsmarena recently released a list of devices that are confirmed to receive the Marshmallow 6.0 and Zenfone is on that list.

Now that the Zenfone 2 is confirmed to get the Android 6 update, the question is when? ASUS has recently confirmed that the update would roll out on Q2 2016, but they havent mentioned whether on at the beginning (April) or at the end (June) of the second quarter. Honestly, the large number of Zenfone users who were devoid of any Lollipop updates deserve an "early" release.

Only a few 2013 smarpthones are getting this update and most of the devices getting the Android 6 Marshmallow update are from 2014 and 2015.
